About SafeSell

Built by people who’ve been at the boat.

SafeSell didn’t start with software. It started at boat ramps, marinas, and dry stacks across Australia — with marine inspectors looking at vessels for buyers who couldn’t be there in person.

That work taught us something the marketplace doesn’t talk about: most of the risk in a private boat sale isn’t in the inspection. It’s in everything that happens around it. The seller you’ve never met. The funds you’re being asked to transfer. The paperwork no one’s quite sure how to handle. The hand-off that happens hundreds of kilometres from where you live.

The problem we kept seeing

We’d complete a clean pre-purchase inspection, sign off on a vessel in good condition, and then watch the buyer hesitate — not because of anything we’d found, but because they had no way to verify the seller, no protection on their funds, and no support through the bill of sale, registration transfer, and handover.

For first-time buyers especially, that gap between “the inspection looks good” and “I’m confident enough to send tens of thousands of dollars to a stranger interstate” was creating real heartache. Deals fell through. Buyers walked away from boats they wanted. Sellers lost legitimate sales.

We had the network on the ground to solve it. We just needed to wrap a process around it.

What SafeSell does

SafeSell is the layer that sits around the sale — not just the inspection. We bring together the things a private buyer or seller would otherwise have to source separately:

  • Identity and seller verification before the transaction starts
  • PPSR, encumbrance, and registration checks
  • Coordinated inspections through trusted marine inspectors, including SeaWorthy Inspections
  • A trust account to hold buyer funds until agreed conditions are met
  • Bill of sale and registration transfer support
  • Physical presence at the vessel during handover — on behalf of the buyer when they can’t be there themselves

For a buyer in Perth purchasing a boat in Brisbane, that last point is often what makes the deal possible. Someone you’ve engaged is at the boat, on the day, walking through the handover.

Why we exist

The Australian boat market is full of good sellers and serious buyers who never get to deal with each other — because the distance, the paperwork, and the trust gap are too big to bridge alone. Brokerage solves that, but at 8–10% commission it doesn’t make sense for a lot of private sales.

SafeSell exists for the space in between: a structured, supported private sale where buyers and sellers keep most of the value, but neither has to carry the risk alone.

The team

SafeSell is operated by Safe Sell Pty Ltd. Our team brings together experience in marine inspection, vessel transport, transaction management, and platform operations — with a working network of inspectors and partners across Australia.

We’re a small Australian business, headquartered locally, working with established industry relationships rather than building a marketplace from the outside in.
